Sidewalk Film Festival is produced by the Alabama Moving Image Association, a federally recognized 501c3 non-profit organization with a mission to inspire, encourage and support filmgoers, the city of Birmingham and the filmmaking community. In addition to hosting the annual film festival, we host monthly networking and educational events, a monthly documentary series, short film and screenwriting competitions, manage a youth board and a variety of other year-round programs.

Tickets sales to our events cover approximately 1/3 of our annual operating cash budget, so we depend on corporate sponsors, grant-making organizations and individuals like you to survive. if you’d like to know more about supporting Sidewalk, please contact us at sidewalk@sidewalkfest.com.

Using Sched.org as our primary scheduling tool, we are happy to offer four different ways to view this year’s lineup. By hovering your cursor over the "Schedule" tab below, you can take your pick of a Simple, Expanded, Grid, or By Venue view.

The Road Movie
The Road Movie
Directed by Dmitrii Kalashnikov
Belarus, Documentary, 67 minutes

Consisting completely of actual Russian auto dashboard camera footage, The Road Movie presents a compilation of insanity. From car wrecks to meteor showers, to Russian road rage, the provocatively voyeuristic documentary allows its audience to sit safely in the passenger seat for a surreal white-knuckle roadtrip from hell.

Consistently jaw dropping, I fully expect The Road Movie to have the loudest audience at Sidewalk 2017.

I probably had you at Russian dash-cam footage.

Nine years after a cryptic family disaster, 16-year-old Cyd arrives in Chicago to spend the summer with her aunt Miranda, a famous author. The film moves meditatively, as Cyd and Miranda come to understand each other and Cyd processes the losses in her family. Meanwhile, Cyd explores her gender and sexual identity with Katie, who she meets and quickly forms a close relationship with. Skillfully written and directed by SHOUT/Sidewalk all-star alum, Stephen Cone, Princess Cyd is a beautiful, ruminative exploration of romantic, familial, and self love.

Whose Streets?
Whose Streets?
Directed by Sabaah Folayan
USA, Documentary, 90 minutes

On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, sparking a national outcry and subsequent protests and rioting. Partially compiled from footage shot by protestors in the immediate tumultuous aftermath, this blistering and brilliant documentary chronicles a community coming together in grief and anger, and the formation of the Black Lives Matter movement, with a startling immediacy and rawness that feels ripped from today’s headlines.

Liberation Day
Liberation Day
Directed by Uģis Olte and Morten Traavik
Norway, Documentary, 97 minutes

In one of the most unusual footnotes in popular music history, in 2015 Slovenien industrial/conceptual art-group, Laibach, traveled, by request, to North Korea to play a concert. Liberation Day documents the band’s trip to the secretive and heavily-restricted nation. Confronted with the demands of an ever-present censorship board, as well traveling under heavy monitoring, the group walks the thin line of maintaining artistic integrity while attempting to stay out of trouble. The setlist includes covers of 80’s hits as well as songs from The Sound of Music.
