Dr. Brinks & Dr. Brinks
Dr. Brinks & Dr. Brinks
Directed by Josh Crockett
USA, Narrative, 88 minutes

The death of their parents forces estranged siblings Marcus and Michelle under the same roof. Michelle’s arrival, combined with the messy aftermath of parental loss, leads to spiraling calamity. Dr. Brinks & Dr. Brinks is often funny and occasionally poignant, but perhaps themost admirable element of the film is the portrayal of Michelle (Sidewalk alum Kristin Slaysman), a fully drawn and unapologetically flawed character. While astute in its own right, Dr. Brinks & Dr. Brinks also provides welcomed levity to the 2017 line-up. - Rachel Morgan

Dayveon
Dayveon
Directed by Amman Abbasi
USA, Narrative, 75 minutes

Amman Abbasi’s feature debut, Dayveon, crafts a compelling study of gang culture in an unexpected place--rural Arkansas. After the death of his older brother, Dayveon finds comfort in attention from members of a local gang. Although reluctant, he undergoes the initiation ritual, which changes everything. With a cast of non-professional actors and an authentic sense of place, the film has the air of a documentary. But a surreal musical score, gorgeous cinematography, and emotional storytelling come from a place of pure imagination.

Freaky Friday (1976)
Jodie Foster! Barbara Harris! The classic Freaky Friday! It’s a bummer when you unexplainably switch bodies with your mom, plus I bet there’s a pesky life lesson in there somewhere. For extra enjoyment gorge out on pre-screening trivia, example: Foster and Harris were both nominated for the Best Actress Golden Globe, they played each other's characters, so technically, they were both nominated for playing the same character (wrap your head around that). On the heels of its 40 th b-day, we’re thrilled to include the original Freaky Friday in the Sidewalk Family line-up. Fun.

Unsupervised and undisciplined, she drifts in and out of relationships, testing her emotional and sexual limits. Shown through tense, occasionally humorous, and otherworldly vignettes, Axolotl Overkill offers a female perspective on the angsty self-destructive anti-hero. Director Helene Hegemann adapts the screenplay from her own novel. The title references the unusual life-cycle of an axolotl, an amphibian that reaches maturity without metamorphosis.

Most Beautiful Island
Directed by Ana Asensio
USA, Narrative, 80 minutes

Luciana lives under the radar in America as an undocumented immigrant. Struggling to support herself and barely holding it together, she becomes lured into a questionable opportunity that rings too good to be true. Told through a mix of reflectively long shots and jarring tension, Most Beautiful Island showcases two sides of freedom--the euphoria of living as you please and the unpredictable cost of choice. Quietly terrifying and at times hypnotic, Most Beautiful Island is writer/director/star Ana Asensio’s impressive directorial debut.

When their wealthy colleague dies, a group of his friends gather at the late millionaire’s upstate New York home for a reading of his rather unconventional will. As they clumsily attempt to sort through internal conflicts stemming from their friend’s last wishes, they experience grief, anger, and hysterics, allraucously tied together. Filled with decadent snobbery and a ton of rosé, this stylized and cynical comedy casts a wary eye on the concept of friendship. - Charlie Bice

Directed by Chris Brown
USA, Narrative, 95 minutes

Six northern California high schoolers face the difficulties of coming of age in this remarkable narrative-documentary hybrid. Joe considers enlisting in the military, while undocumented Isaac stays off the grid; popular Sienna struggles with the divorce of her parents, while Kai’s self-loathing manifests in cutting. Directed by Vincent Grashaw
USA, Narrative, 99 minutes

Beautiful cinematography and introspective storytelling make And Then I Go an insightful portrait of the life-altering nature of bullying. Through the eyes of two socially misaligned students, Edwin and Flake, the world is a terrible place. Their only comfort is their friendship and a shared desire to push back against the ugliness of teenage life. With time and changing perspectives the boys begin to drift apart, but outside stresses realign the two, possibly not for the best. And Then I Go is patient filmmaking at its finest.

USA, Narrative, 82 minutes

Menashe is the Hasidic Jewish film you never knew you needed to see. Threatened with the loss of his son unless he remarries, widower Menashe attempts to find order and meaning within the strict customs of his orthodox religion.  Performed in Yiddish and shot over the course of two years in Borough Park, Brooklyn, Menashe will charm and move you with its poignant and powerful story and fascinate you with its unprecedented glimpse into a frequently insular society.

SHOUT Closing Night – Beach Rats
Beach Rats – SHOUT Closing Night
Directed by Eliza Hittman
USA, Narrative, 85 minutes

Handsome 19-year- old Frankie stumbles recklessly through the summer, his firstwithout another year of high school ahead. He runs around with friends, drinking and drugging, he reluctantly gets a girlfriend and, more than anything else, he wrestles with his sexuality. Moving from chat rooms to the passenger seat of stranger’s cars, Frankie’s life seems to be teetering on the verge of explosion. His father is dying of cancer, his future is unclear and his behavior is dangerous.

Director Eliza Hittman’s presentation of dark, drunken and dreamy corners of Brooklyn feel like perilous foreign landscapes. The film’s cinematography (Hélène Louvart) and direction is poetically hypnotizing. The feminine approach behind the camera, combined with the masculine bodies that consistently fill the frame, flip the typical rubric and the result is a unique, androgynously beautiful, incredibly watchable work of art. Beach Rats is a welcomed warning sign that the LGBTQ cinematic landscape is changing. The film premiered this past January at the Sundance Film Festival and we are honored that it is the Closing Night Film for SHOUT 2017.

Closing Night: My Friend Dahmer sponsored by Jeff Richardson, Brik Realty
My Friend Dahmer
Directed by Marc Meyers
USA, Narrative, 110 minutes
Closing Night Film

In case you haven’t heard, in 1991 Milwaukee resident and chocolate factory employee Jeffery Dahmer confessed to the murder of 17 young men. Included in his confession was an admission to the dismemberment and cannibalism of a number of his victims. My Friend Dahmer doesn’t tell that story, but, instead, covers the years of Dahmer’s life just before he began his killing spree; the era when his only victims were an occasional squirrel, his binge drinking habits began to emerge and his thoughts were beginning to take a turn towards murder.

Moving out of the role of young handsome Disney star and into that of young handsome serial killer, Ross Lynch is strangely convincing as the awkward, eccentric and attention-hungry high school Jeffrey Dahmer. Based on the Angoulême Prize winning and bestselling graphic novel of the same name, the film’s narrative is rooted in the personal experiences of the graphic novel’s author and Dahmer's high school bestie, Derf Backderf, who befriended Dahmer upon witnessing what he thought was the comedic outbreak of a class clown. My Friend Dahmer is not only engrossing and provocative, but is also an eerie, visually captivating time capsule.

Sundowners
Sundowners
Directed by Pavan Moondi
USA, Narrative, 95 minutes

On one hand, Sundowners is an indie comedy about the existential ennui of thirty-somethings frustrated that their day jobs don’t fit their artistic ambitions. On the other, it’s a classic comedy of errors. Aspiring filmmaker, Alex, needs to pay his rent so he accepts a job to film a wedding at a Mexican resort. Best friend Justin joins as his assistant. Problem is Alex’s boss, Tom, played by Tim Heidecker, is an unapologetically self-deluded jerk who has all but set them up for complete failure.
